Outline (in English)

Course outline:
This lecture will discuss the newly developed monasticism of the High Middle Ages (late 11th-13th centuries) in the light of the prevailing religious mentality of the period. In particular, we will discuss how the monks interacted with secular society.

Learning Objectives:
The goals of this course are to understand Christian monasticism, understand religious spirituality in medieval society through monasticism, and consider the interrelationship between monasticism and secular social life.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Students should consolidate their understanding of the course content by reviewing the handouts and reading the bibliography.

Grading Criteria/Policy:
Short reports: 20%, Term-end report: 80%
