Outline (in English)
In this class, we will explore the theme of adaptation. What happens when a work is adapted to a different time period or different culture? We will analyze the process of adaptation in various genres, such as fairy tales and the western.

「翻案」をテーマに、英語圏と日本の文学作品また映画を見ていく。神話やおとぎ話を現代に置き換えるとき何が起こるのか。なぜシェークスピアの戯曲のようなある特定の作品は、時代や文化を超えて翻案されがちなのか。授業では学生自身も実際に翻案し、お互いの作品を批評する。

Students will develop the ability to read texts closely, with an eye to their cross-cultural contexts.

The class revolves around students' presentations and discussions. There will be some lectures, but most of the class time will be devoted to students' active participation. Students will receive feedback on their work in class, via Hoppii, and during office hours. The format of this class in a given week could change, depending on the Covid situation.
