Outline (in English)

Outline and objectives: Literary criticism is primarily an act of interpreting literary works (literary texts). Interpretation is an act of fixing a specific context for reading a text and defining the meaning of the text. After learning the elements for making a literary interpretation through questions such as how it differs from a book report, students concretely analyze a text (a British novel) in relation to some cultural and social context. In that process, students learn the basic concepts and keywords necessary to analyze a novel - stories (plots and discourses), characters, narrators and focalizers, images, symbols and allegories, etc. Finally, students discuss one another's interpretations of the literary work treated in class.

Learning activities outside of classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend a total of four hours to understand the course content.

Grading Criteria/Policies: Final grade will be calculated according to the following process: short reports and in-class contribution (50%), term-end paper (50%).
