Outline (in English)

Course Outline: The aim of this class is to develop the basic knowledge for reading Japanese classical literature and Chinese classical literature. First we will read Kara monogatari (12th century), which is an adaptation of Chinese classics, and then compare it with the original Chinese classical works that it is based on. By reading both, we will appreciate the literary expression of each. To get an accurate interpretation, a correct knowledge of the grammar is indispensable, so we will also check the grammar each time.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students should have attained the following:
1. An accurate knowledge of the classical grammars of Japanese and Chinese.
2. An understanding of the points of appreciation of Japanese and Chinese classic literatures through reading carefully.
3. A deep understanding of the background of the works, their formation and peripheral knowledge.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class, students will be expected to have read the distributed resumé and read the references related to the topic. Your study time will be more than two hours for each class. After the class, students should review the lesson content, summarize their own thoughts, and deepen their understanding. They should also think about the content and prepare questions to ask in the next lecture. Your study time will also be more than two hours for each class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end report (30%), short reports (70%).
