Outline (in English)

This course gives an overview of the monastic discipline of Buddhism based on the Theravada Buddhist literature. Students will learn how Buddhist monasticism was established and developed and how Buddhist communities are administrated by monks and nuns. At the end of the course, students are expected to understand that the monastic rules play a vital role in Buddhism. There is no need for preparation, but you will be asked to read the related books introduced during class and actively learn about Buddhism yourself. Your study time will be more than one hour for a class. Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Examination 80%, Short report 20%.
