Outline (in English)

This course will deal with the novels that have been repeatedly published in Japanese language textbooks for schools at all three levels.
Many people, young and old, might have encountered Natsume Soseki’s novel “Kokoro” in high school as this novel has been picked up in high school Japanese textbooks many times over decades. This kind of “regular” novels in textbooks, however, have not always been read in the same way. Its interpretation has varied depending on time and this course will consider the social or historical backgrounds these different interpretations could reflect.
In this course, students will read a different “regular” novel for each class time while referring to how these novels have been read so far. Students will also discuss the dialogues and the issues presented in the texts as intractable issues in such novels continue to be contemporary issues.
In order to analytically approach such issues, this course will also introduce students to some methodologies such as literary theory.
