Outline and objectives

Hoko (補講)
In this class, the instructor will teach a combination of core English language skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading) as well as how to write and give quality speeches.

Goal

The goal of the class is for students to review and reinforce their core English skills. Also, students will improve at writing and giving speeches.
Students majoring in international economics who failed a required English course(s) must take “hoko” in order to graduate.

In this class, students will learn a combination of core English language skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading) as well as in writing and giving speeches. Feedback can be given in class. The teacher will give it orally and students will do peer review each week. They will listen to speeches in groups and will give oral and written comments for other students.

Introduction to the class; self-introduction writing; students give introductory speeches in their groups

2[対面/face to face]:Unit 1

Warm up conversation; watch a sample speech on video; go over basic phrases for introductions; eye contact; cloze listening; write and deliver speeches

3[対面/face to face]:Unit 2

Warm up conversation; Students will watch a sample speech and learn
useful phrases; they will learn different kinds of gestures and will learn hand gestures; they will give their own speeches.

Students will do a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample speech; they will learn new phrases; they will learn more hand gestures: they will write and give their own speeches.

5[対面/face to face]:Unit 4

Students will do a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample speech and learn new phrases; they will learn more gestures; they will make and give their own speeches in groups.

6[対面/face to face]:Preparation for the first graded speech

Students will write their speeches. They will choose a speech from the first four units. They will give them in groups and assess the speeches of other speeches. Students will make their visual aids.

Students will give their speeches will visual aids. They will assess the speech of another student.

Students will begin with a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample video; they will learn more about hand gestures; they will write and give their own speeches; they will assess the speeches of students in their group.

Students will begin with a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample speech; they will learn more gestures and will learn about emphasis in speaking; they will write and give their speeches in groups; they will assess the speeches of other students.

Students will start with a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample speech; they will do a cloze listening activity; they will learn about ideas for making visual aids; they will write and give their speeches in a group; they will assess the speeches of other students.

Students will start with a warm up conversation; they will watch a sample video; they will practice chunking (phrasing); they will review gestures; they will write and give their own speeches: they will assess other students.

12[対面/face to face]:Preparation for second speech

Students will choose a speech topic from units 5-8. Students will write their speeches, give them in groups, and assess speeches of other students. They will make visual aids as well.

13[対面/face to face]:Second graded speech

Students will give their speeches to the class, they will write a review of another student's speech.

14[対面/face to face]:Review and finish the textbook

Wrap up; complete the textbook; practice final speech again in a group, give feedback to other students

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students should review for each class for an hour or longer. ASSIGNMENTS AS WELL AS EXCUSED ABSENCE FORMS (HOSPITAL VISIT RECORDS, ETC.) MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE BEGINNING OF FOLLOWING LESSON.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて4時間を標準とします。

Grading criteria

Student evaluations will be based on the following:
(1) Participation in class discussions/attitude 20%
(2) Performance of Speeches 40%
(3) Written Script of Speeches 40%

Attendance is very important for this class. Students who are late three times will be considered absent.
