Outline and objectives

Hoko (補講)
In this class, the instructor will teach a combination of core English language skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading) as well as how to write and give quality speeches.

Goal

The main goal of the class is for students to review and to reinforce students' core English skills.
Students majoring in international economics who failed a required English course(s) must take “hoko” to graduate.
Students will improve at writing and giving speeches. This includes better pronunciation.

In this class, students will study a combination of core English language skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading) and will practice writing speeches and giving speeches in class. Students will do peer review of other student speeches. Students will watch example videos of sample speeches and conversations related to each topic. Feedback can be given in class. The teacher will give it orally and students will give it in groups. Students will give weekly speeches and will give oral and weekly feedback as peer review.

Students will learn basic vocabulary for speeches, such as useful phrases. Read a sample speech. They can do cloze listening activities. Students can write and give their own speeches.

3[対面/face to face]:(2) Talking about Yourself

Students will do the warm up speaking task in pairs. They will do cloze listening tasks and watch two videos. They can write a speech and give in a group. Students will do a peer review of speeches.

4[対面/face to face]:(3) Express Yourself

Students will start with a conversation warm up. They will watch two videos of a speech and conversation based on the topic. They will write a speech, deliver it and do peer assessment in groups.

5[対面/face to face]:(4) Talking about Hobbies and Interests

Class will begin with the conversation warm up. Students will do cloze listening activities. They will watch a sample speech and conversation. They will write a speech on the topic. They will give the speeches in a group and give feedback to other students.

Students will do the conversation warm up. They will watch the two videos and do cloze listening. Then they can write a speech and give a speech in a group. They can give feedback to other students.

7[対面/face to face]:Preparation for first speech, Unit 6 - Your Future Plans

If there is time we will do part of unit 6. After that students will practice writing and giving a speech. They will choose one from the first five units and make it better. They will make visual aids, whether Power Point or on paper.

Students will give their speeches. During class they must do peer assessment for another student and give feedback.

Students will continue with unit 6. They can watch two videos. They will do cloze listening. They will write a speech, give a speech in a group, and give feedback to other students.

Students will start with the warm up conversation. They will do cloze listening, and watch videos of a sample speech and conversation based on the topic. They will write a speech, give the speech in a group and give feedback to other students.

Students will start with a warm up conversation. They will do two cloze listening exercises. They will watch two sample videos of a speech and conversation. They will write a speech, give the speech in a group, and give feedback to other students.

Students will start class with the warm up. They will warch two videos. They will do cloze listening for both videos. They will write a speech, give the speech in a group and give peer feedback to the other students.

13[対面/face to face]:Preparation for second speech

Students will practice writing, giving their speeches and will make their visual aids. Students can help each other by doing peer assessment.

Grading criteria

Student evaluations will be based on the following.
(1) Participation in class discussions/attitude (20%).
(2) Two speeches for a grade - 20% each (40% for both)
(3) Writing for the two speeches - 20% each (40% for both)

Students need to submit both visual aids and written speeches for the two graded speeches.

Attendance is very important in this class. Students who are late three times will be considered absent once.
