Outline and objectives

Improving communication, listening comprehension, critical thinking, and self-study skills.

Goal

The main aim of this course is to explore some communication strategies for sharing and discussing information and exchanging opinions on several contemporary and thought-provoking topics. Students will learn some important communication skills, build their vocabulary, and practise writing and presenting opinions, short reports, and researched information. Students will also explore several websites useful for self-study, especially for listening.

The course will combine speaking (pair work and group work) and some writing practice in each class. You will study some skills needed for sharing and reporting information, clarifying and explaining, and building simple arguments. We will work on a variety of debatable topics. For each topic students will be provided with vocabulary, reading, and questions for discussions. At the end of each topic students will research them further, and present them in groups.

Submission of assignments and feedback will be on Google Classroom and/or At the beginning of class, feedback for the previous class is given using some comments from submitted reaction papers.

Grading criteria

Participation & work in class: 25%, homework assignments & projects: 50%, final project: 25%.
There will be no tests: your grade will depend on your weekly work in class, and all the projects and presentations we will work on.
Please note that you will not achieve a passing grade for attendance only: you will need to submit all assignments to pass.

Cheating/copying/not using one's original words/turning in assignments late will result in a lower grade and possibly failure (no credit).

Guidelines and grading requirements will be given to students in print at the beginning of the course. This syllabus might be modified slightly according to the level and the needs of the students.
