授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This course will expand upon the study of English begun in the first year. The language of instruction will be English. All four language skills will be exercised in this course - reading, writing, listening, and speaking, - with an emphasis on assessing and improving the ability to communicate in English in writing and speaking.

Classroom activities will include grammar and vocabulary, listening and reading texts on challenging topics, academic writing, and thought-provoking discussions.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Each week students will focus on readings from the text, grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking exercises. We will cover units 1 through 12 in the text, have a quiz after each unit, and a 60 - minute Final Exam at the end of the term. 本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

Most materials will be supplied by the instructor. There is a required textbook: Passages Student's Book 1 Third Edition, Jack C. Richards & Chuck Sandy, Cambridge U. Press, 2016

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
To pass, students must 1) complete all assignments for homework or in-class activities & projects (50%) 2) use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class (50%). Grades of S, A, B, or C will be awarded based on the quality of coursework, and on effort demonstrated by classroom participation and attendance.
