Outline and objectives

The central objective of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays.

Goal

The goal of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays. Students are expected to complete at least two writing assignments and are encouraged to rewrite, in order to improve the quality of their written work.

Lectures will be kept to a minimum, in order to explain parts of the textbook, and also will be for needed grammar exercises. The main focus of the class will be for student pair and group practice. Students are expected to do peer assessment of each other's writing. Feedback can be given in class and on their assignments.

Week 1[対面/face to face]:Course Overview

Introduction to class structure and textbook.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Writing about Yourself

Students will learn about capital letters and will write about themselves and a classmate. Students will do peer assessment.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Family and Friends

Students will learn about types of pronouns, possessive adjectives, and will write about their family, a friend, and will do a peer writing check.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Activities

Students will learn about the present tense, and will write about their free time activities.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Activities, Continued

Students will write about staying healthy, will do a peer assessment and will learn about email writing.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Giving Instructions

Students will learn about count and non-count nouns, imperative sentences, signal words, and will write about how to make or do something.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day
- First written assignment is due

Students will learn about prepositions of time, frequency adverbs, and will write about a typical weekday.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day, Continued

Students will do a peer check and will write about their favorite holiday. They will do a peer assessment and will read sample paragraphs.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions

Students will learn about the present progressive and will describe a classmate and themselves. We will make cluster diagrams, too.

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions, Continued

Students will check each other's writing from the last class, and will write descriptions in groups, and will write about Japanese products.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Writing about Places

Students will write about prepositions of place and will write about their rooms, and describe a picture.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Writing a Narrative

Students will learn about irregular verbs, making questions, and will write a narrative by looking at pictures.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Writing a Narrative, Continued

Students will write about personal experience and will write a biography and autobiography. Students will do a peer assessment.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Expressing Your Opinion - Second writing assignment is due

Students will write an opinion about different topics and will do a peer check of a partner.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students should review in the textbook before each class and are expected to complete all class assignments in the case of being absent.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

English book dictionary or electronic dictionary are strongly recommended for classroom use.

To pass this course and receive credit, students have to:
a.)Complete all outside-class homework assignments and in-class writing activities,75%
b.)Use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class,10%
c.)Participation and attitude are central to the classroom environment,15%
