Outline and objectives

This course will provide students with the necessary skills and vocabulary they need to participate in discussions on various topics and express their ideas in writing. Students will learn different communication and writing strategies, practise explaining and presenting their points of view and results of their research in discussions and in writing.

Goal

The goals of this course are:
To explore communication strategies for sharing and discussing information and opinions on various contemporary and thought-provoking topics.
To learn important communication skills and writing strategies: useful techniques necessary for researching, planning, explaining, and discussing information.
To explore key writing skills and practice writing essays and reports.
To improve spoken fluency and listening comprehension through group discussions.
To develop critical thinking skills.
To develop learner autonomy.

The course will combine speaking (pair work and group work) and writing practice in each class. You will study skills needed for sharing and reporting information, explaining researched information in speech and in writing, making arguments and counterarguments, and organising your ideas in effective reports and essays. We will work on a variety of topics and controversial issues. For each topic students will be provided with research materials and questions for discussions. At the end of each topic students will write a short report or an essay. We will also work on research projects on the topics of students' choice. Feedback will be given in class, on Google Classroom, and via email.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Preparation outside of class will consist of reading articles or working with online materials, researching topics, preparing for class discussions, notetaking, and writing reports and essays.
Guidelines and handouts for assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. Weekly preparation outside class will take, on average, 1.5 - 2 hours.

Textbooks

There is no required textbook for this course. All materials will be provided by the teacher and posted on Google Classroom.

A list of various useful websites will be part of weekly class work. The links will be given to students during the course.

Grading criteria

Participation & class work: 25%, homework assignments & projects: 50%, final project: 25%.
