Outline and objectives

This course will expand upon the study of English begun in the first year. The language of instruction will be English. All four language skills will be exercised in this course - reading, writing, listening, and speaking, - with an emphasis on assessing and improving the ability to communicate in English in writing and speaking.

Goal

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to use their own experience and opinions in order to maximize involvement and learning.

Each week students will focus on readings from the text, grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking exercises. We will cover units 1 through 12 in the text, have a quiz after each unit, and a 60 - minute Final Exam at the end of the term. 本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

Textbooks

Most materials will be supplied by the instructor. There is a required textbook: Passages Student's Book 1 Third Edition, Jack C. Richards & Chuck Sandy, Cambridge U. Press, 2016

References

Students should have a dictionary.

Grading criteria

To pass, students must 1) buy the textbook, 2) miss no more than 4 classes a semester, 3) complete all assignments for homework or in-class activities & projects, and 4) use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class. Grades of S, A, B, or C will be awarded based on the quality of coursework, and on effort demonstrated by classroom participation and attendance. *Students who are more than 30 minutes late are marked absent.
