授業の進め方と方法Method(s)(学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )
Students will watch videos from America's CBS News 3 on Seibido's Streamline website and they will do "kakitori" exercises, i.e., they will listen for keywords and fill in the blanks in their textbooks. Students will also check their understanding of the videos by answering the T/F and Summary sections of the textbook, and then they will work individually and/or in groups to prepare answers to the Critical Thinking sections in every unit, in writing. Students will then share their answers with others students in the group interactively and/or with the rest of the students in the class, interactively. Emphasis is on communicating and not on grammar, meaning that if other students can understand them, their grammar is satisfactory, although with more practice we aim to improve in grammatical accuracy as well.
The primary methods of instruction will be videos and lectures, and students will write papers on the critical thinking questions to prepare for the group discussions. They will then make MP4 recordings of their discussions and submit them by email. Brief feedback will be given in class and more detailed feedback will be provided to students by email.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
60 hours or more are necessary for preparation and review; therefore, in order to properly prepare for the exam and class activities, students should spend at least 2 hours on English studies for every one hour spent in class. Homework will generally involve grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing assignments selected by the instructor from the textbook and assigned throughout the semester. Required homework will be collected, graded, or checked and returned to the students, and opportunities for bonus credit may also be given. Students should also take detailed notes, as their notebooks will be inspected at the mid-term and/or at end of the term; moreover, as a significant part of classroom activity, notes may also be factored into the final grade.

参考書References
A Japanese-English dictionary, and/or an English dictionary designed for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students such as Longman's English Dictionary is recommended. Different levels are available including Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced, so students should use the one of their own choice, as needed.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
There will be one test given near the end of the term. The test will include objective questions such as True/False, multiple-choice, and matching items. There may also be a performance section, such as an essay, an interview, or individual or group presentations, and the test will be factored into the final grade at 40%. Assignments for students to do as homework will prepare students for the final assessment test which students will take in the classroom, and students will prepare and review for the test both online and/or in class. Homework, classwork, and notes will together factor as another 60%, and most of that 60% will be determined by students' answers to the Critical Thinking questions, in writing and in their comments in groups. Students may also be given opportunities to earn bonus points at various times throughout the semester.
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
This section does not apply to me directly since I am a new teacher at Hosei University; however, I always welcome comments and suggestions from my students at Hosei University and I have considered the feedback from students at other fine Japanese universities as well.
学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
Students need access to a personal computer or to a smartphone, and if they do not have one, they will need to access a computer in one of Hosei's computer labs or in the library.
その他の重要事項Others
With enough practice, all students can make significant progress in their English skills. As your instructor, I am always interested in your comments and feedback, so please let me know if there is something I can do to help you achieve your goals. You can speak to me before or after class, or you can contact me by email at garytexas44@gmail.com. I can speak a little Japanese, but please write your messages in English, if possible.
