Outline and objectives

The central objective of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays.

Goal

The goal of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, students should then write brief but complete essays.
Students need to complete at least two writing assignments. They can choose a topic from the textbook. Students will do peer assessment in order to identify mistakes and also to help their own writing.

Lectures are kept to a minimum except in the case of needed grammar practice with a focus on common errors Japanese students make. The main part of the class is for students to do exercises in pairs and in groups and also to do peer assessment of the writing of other students. Before students write they will need to brainstorm. Feedback can be given in class orally by the teacher as well as on the assignments of students by the teacher. Students can give feedback in pairs about their weekly writing assignments.

Students will write their self-introductions and will
do peer assessment of the writing of other students.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Who am I? - Self-introduction

Students will learn about organizing, adding more information, and about connecting sentences.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:An Important Place

Students will learn about conclusions and about using prepositions.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:An Ideal Partner

Students will learn about listing points, adding reasons and combining reasons.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:My Favorite Photo

Students will learn about background information, writing a concluding sentence and in using tenses.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:My Seal

Students will learn about organizing information, topic sentences and in using because.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Party Time

Students will write about plans and instructions and in using 'so that' and 'to'.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Thank-you Note - First Writing Test

Students will write and check their draft. If there is time we will do unit 7, or a part of it.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Movie Review - Students will start to write at least two paragraphs or more

Students will write a summary and give their opinion, and will learn about pronouns.

Students will learn about supporting sentences and in using 'so'.

Students will learn about adding examples, and will write about wishes.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Advertisements

Students will write about attention getters, testimonials, and in using persuasive language.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Lessons Learned

Students will write about explanations and regret, will learn about conclusions and word choice.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Second Writing Test

An English paper dictionary or electronic dictionary are strongly recommended for classroom use.

Grading criteria

To pass this course and receive credit, students have to:
a.)Complete all outside-class homework assignments and in-class writing activities, 80%
b.)Use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class, 10%
c.)Participation and attitude are central to the classroom environment, 10%
