Outline and objectives

The central objective of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays.

Goal

The goal of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays.
Several writing assignments should be completed. Students can choose the topics from the textbook. Depending on the ability of the students, six to nine assignments should be completed. On average, there will be writing assignments every other week.

Lectures will be kept to a minimum, as the focus in the class will be about pair and group practice. Grammar practice is seen as a needed part of instruction, especially if it relates to common errors Japanese students make in writing. Feedback can be given in class as well on the assignments of students. Students can give feedback to each other students in pairs, about their weekly writing assignments.

Week 1[対面/face to face]:Course Overview

Introduction to class structure and textbook.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Writing about Yourself

Students will learn about capital letters and will write themselves and a classmate. Students will do peer assessment.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Family and Friends

Students will learn about pronouns and possessive adjectives, and will write about their family, a friend and will do peer assessment.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your activities

Students will learn about the present tense and will write about free time activities.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Activities, Continued

Students will write about staying healthy and how to write e-mails.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Giving Instructions

Students will learn about count and non-count nouns, imperative sentences and will write about how to make or do something.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day

Students will learn about prepositions of time, and also about adverbs of frequency, time-order paragraphs and paragraph unity.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day, Continued- First writing assignment due

Students will write about typical or special days and will do peer assessment of writing.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions

Students will learn about the present progressive, making questions and adjectives, and details in support sentences.

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions, Continued

Students will write about themselves and people they know, write about descriptions, and Japanese products.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Writing about Places

Students will write about prepositions of place and will write about describing rooms, such as where they live and describing pictures.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Writing a Narrative

Students will learn about irregular verbs in the past tense, as well as narrative paragraphs.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Writing a Narrative, Continued

Students will write about personal experience, their autobiography, and will check the writing of other students.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Expressing Your Opinion - Second writing assignment is due

Students will write about their opinion of a choice from different topics, and will learn about signal words in paragraphs.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are expected to review before each class and to complete class exercises when absent. .本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

Grading criteria

To pass this course and receive credit, students have to:
a.)Complete all outside-class homework assignments and in-class writing activities, 65%
b.)Use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class, 10%
c.)Participation and attitude are central to the classroom environment,10%
d) Using the online workbook, 15%
