Outline and objectives

The central objective of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then writing brief but complete essays. Students will also get grammar practice at the sentence level.

Goal

The goal of this course is to introduce and practice a variety of common writing styles beginning with paragraph forms. After enough competence has been developed, then students should be writing brief but complete essays.
Students will need to submit at several writing assignments for the course. Students are encouraged to rewrite and do peer assessment in class. There should be homework every other week, and there will be between six to nine assignments, depending on the ability of the students.

The Class Hour: Lectures will be kept to a minimum, and will include needed grammar explanation for common errors. The goal is for students to do pair and group practice. Students will write in class, check each other's writing and complete grammar exercises when needed in order to improve their own writing. Feedback can be given in class by the teacher, and also in writing on the assignments of students. Students can give feedback too in pairs on a weekly basis, about their writing assignments.

Introduction to class structure and textbook.
Students can write a self-introduction and introduce themselves

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Writing about Yourself

Write self introduction paragraph.
Grammar focus on capital letters, and write about a classmate

Week 3[対面/face to face]:Write about Your Family and Friends

Grammar - subject pronouns, possessive adjectives, write about
your family and a relative

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Write about Your Family (Continued)

Peer assessment, conjunctions, write about a friend, and e-mail writing,

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Write about Your Activities

Grammar - simple present, making questions, topic and supporting sentences, write about free time activities

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Write about Your Activities, Continued

Identify kinds of sentences, pre-writing and writing about healthy activities, check for grammatical mistakes and more e-mail writing.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Giving Instructions

Write about how to make something, count and non-count nouns, signal words and imperatives in paragraphs.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Giving Instructions, Continued

Write about how to make or do something, peer assessment, check grammar mistakes in a paragraph, and write a recipe and listen to your partner's recipe.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day

Grammar - prepositions of time, frequency adverbs, time-order paragraphs, paragraph unity, and students will write about a typical day at school

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Writing about Your Day, Continued

Peer assessment of partner's writing, identify specific grammar use in a paragraph, holiday writing and peer check, and grammar check for a sample paragraph.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions

Grammar - present progressive and adjectives, describe a classmate, describe yourself and a person's character.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Writing Descriptions, Continued

Peer assessment of descriptions, writing descriptions in a group, write about Japanese products, peer assessment, and real-life writing examples.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Writing about Places

Describe rooms, prepositions of place, write about a classroom and peer check, write about your own room and peer check, and describe pictures.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Writing a Narrative- Final assignment is due

Simple past tense, and irregular verbs, learn about narrative paragraphs, tell a story with pictures, and write about personal experience along with peer check.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。Students should spend time reviewing what was covered after each class and if absent, should complete what they missed.

Textbooks

Ready to Write 1, Pearson. Other supplementary material: specific grammar writing exercises will be prepared by the instructor.

References

An English dictionary or electronic dictionary are strongly recommended for classroom use, in order for students to check spelling and to use appropriate vocabulary.

Grading criteria

To pass this course and receive credit, students have to:
a.)Complete all outside-class homework assignments and in-class writing activities, 65%
b.)Use English when speaking to the teacher and during English speaking activities in class, 10%
c.)Participation and attitude are central to the classroom environment,10%
d) Using the online workbook. It will be 15%
