Outline and objectives

The goal of the course is for students to improve at oral skills and in giving speeches.

Goal

The goal is for students to improve at public speaking by overcoming their weaknesses. Speeches should be longer, students should speak slowly and must remember eye contact.
Students need to practice writing their speeches. Students should give three speeches in class for a grade. Students will be graded on content, delivery and visual aids.

Students will practice writing and giving their speeches. They will give speeches in groups and they will evaluate each other. Lectures will be kept to a minimum. Pair and group practice are central. Feedback can be given in class, by the instructor to the students and in peer review, where students can make oral and written comments for other students.

第1回[対面/face to face]:Orientation for the class. Students will begin to practice in pairs on the topic of self-introductions.

Posture and delivery.
Students will practice giving introductions.

第2回[対面/face to face]:Hometown - Students will give speeches about their hometowns and will begin peer assessment.

Eye contact. Students will introduce their hometowns and will assess eye contact.

第3回[対面/face to face]:Family - Students will give speeches about their families and will practice gestures.

Gestures. Students will practice using gestures.

第4回[対面/face to face]:Interests and hobbies - Students will give speeches about their interests and will practice conclusions.

Stage position. Students will practice by focusing on posture, and in writing the focus is on conclusons.

Students will practice for their speeches in class. They can evaluate other students. They will work on visual aids.

第6回[対面/face to face]:First speech - All students will give a speech for a grade and will prepare before they start.

Projection and pronunciation. Students

Intonation. Students will assess the intonation of other students.

Phrasing and pronunciation. Students will practice pronunciation with a goal of being comprehensible.

Students will give speeches and will listen to speeches in their groups. They can critique other students. They wil make visual aids.

Students will prepare and give their speeches for a grade

Students will give a speech and will listen to speeches.

第13回[対面/face to face]:Events - Students will give speeches and focus on listening and asking questions to presenters.

Students will learn to anticipate questions and audience feedback.
Students can take notes on the speeches they hear.

Grading criteria

First speech - 40% - both oral and written
Second speech - 40% - both oral and written
Participation - 20%



Participation means talking with your partner and group about your speeches. It means listening to other students giving speeches, and giving written feedback.
Students who sleep, use their phones or are late will have their participation grade reduced.
Students need to submit their visual aids and written speeches twice during the course.
