Outline (in English)
【Course outline】
This seminar will explore the nature of democratic and non-democratic regimes. Its central topics will include governance and mobilization in non-democratic regimes, mechanism behind regime change (democratization, collapse of democracy etc), and the strengths and weaknesses of democracy. Students are required to deliver presentations, actively participate in discussion, and submit research papers.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of this course, students will be able to 1) explain theories of democratic and non-democratic regimes and political change, 2) analyze the political system of a country of their own interest based on existing debates, and 3) acquire techniques for argumentation and essay writing.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Read the assigned literature in advance and summarize your questions and comments. In addition, each student is expected to read the related literature on the topic of his/her interest and prepare for writing the report.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Evaluation will be based on a combination of the qualities of presentation, class contribution, and research paper.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本ゼミでは非・民主主義体制の統治や動員メカニズム、政治体制の変動（民主化・権威主義体制への移行など）、民主主義体制の強みと問題点などについて検討する。
到達目標Goal
(1)民主主義体制および非・民主主義体制、また政治変動に関する諸理論を自分なりに整理し、説明することができる。(2)各自が関心を持った国の政治体制について既存の議論を踏まえて分析できる。(3)議論や論文作成の技術を習得する。

欠席・遅刻の場合は必ず事前に教員に連絡すること。3回を超えて欠席した場合は成績評価の対象としない。
