Outline (in English)

This course aims to deepen students' understanding on political economy of four Southeast Asian countries, namely, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It also aims to familiarize students with some basic theories and notions regarding interrelations between democratization and economic development, such as bureaucratic authoritarianism, dual-sector model, middle-income trap, and three waves of democratization. Prior knowledge about Southeast Asia is not required. Students are allowed to write their answers in English in the final exam, if they prefer.
