Outline (in English)
The course will explore four major themes using both formal and informal authentic English materials. The instructor will choose these themes in consultation with the students. Through engaging with these four themes, the students will work on the following areas of language learning:
1. Language: learning grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
2. Fluency: using and refining the language skills they already have.
3. Meaningful input: using real-life topics to improve listening and reading skills.
4. Meaningful output: communicating opinions on real-life issues in speaking and writing.

This course uses contemporary topics to develop the four major language skills; reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course offers students opportunities to read, discuss, give presentations and write about contemporary topics. Through this course, students will; improve their confidence when communicating in English, gain effective communication skills, increase their vocabulary and improve pronunciation and fluency in speech.

The goal of this class is for students to demonstrate English proficiency through giving presentations, discussing issues and writing response essays.

This is a discussion based class, and active participation is a basic requirement. Students are expected to use the different materials provided by the instructor for small groups as well as whole-class discussions. Individual presentations and group presentations are also going to be primary methods of learning in this class. Students are expected to research different topics and give short presentations in English. The instructor will provide short lectures to help students understand different language points that they encounter in the materials used in this class.
All assignments will be given to students using Google Classroom and students are expected to submit all assignments, unless advised otherwise, on this platform. Instructional videos on how to use Google Classroom are freely available online. All students should study such material to gain familiarity with the basic functions of this learning platform before the beginning of classes. Before the first class meeting, details for joining Google Classroom will be posted on Hopii. If there is a change in the COVID19 protocols, the classes will shift to online, but the basic structure will remain the same. When online, please attend class in a quiet and private environment and with a working video. Avoid taking classes on the train or other noisy environments. If a student’s environment is deemed unsuitable for learning, the student will be considered absent.

The primary work for this class will be done in class. Students are expected to use their time outside of class to adequately prepare for class activities and complete assignments. Reading and preparing for individual or group-presentations will be the major outside-class activities.

There is no textbook for this class. Websites like Breaking News English and TED, and YouTube will be used to access authentic material for students to read, listen to or watch.
参考書References
Students are encouraged to pay close attention to the list of news items, presentations and documentaries that the teacher will provide weekly.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
The final grade will come from continuous evaluation throughout the semester with the following breakdown;
