授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This course is designed to help students to become informed users of contemporary communication media. Students will learn to identify, analyze, interpret and evaluate media content. Students are expected to reflect on the content, and respond critically via discussions, presentations and writing assignments.
Student tasks will include answering comprehension questions, writing essays and giving presentations in groups or individually.

The course will focus on analyzing foreign media, and creating critical responses. Students are expected to gain awareness of the major themes, issues and techniques in the media. The overarching goal of this course is to develop the key skills of critical thinking and communication through foreign media analysis.

The primary methods in this class will be discussions and presentations. The instructor will give short lectures at the beginning of the class or assign videos to watch in class. After that students will discuss the concepts from the lectures in groups as well as together as a class. In addition, students from time to time will be asked to give presentations individually and in groups on different aspects of foreign media.
Google Classroom will be used by the instructor to give assignments to students, and students are expected to submit all assignments, unless advised otherwise, through Google Classroom. Instructional videos on how to use Google Classroom are freely available online. All students should study such material to gain familiarity with the basic functions of this learning platform before the beginning of classes. Before the first class meeting, details for joining Google Classroom will be posted on Hopii. If there is a change in the COVID 19 protocols, the classes will shift to online, but the basic structure will remain the same.
Active participation in class is a basic requirement of this course and will contribute to the final grade. When online, please attend class in a quiet and private environment and with a working video. Avoid taking classes on the train or other noisy environments. If a student’s environment is deemed unsuitable for learning, the student will be considered absent.

There is no required textbook for this class. Selected handouts will be provided by the instructor. In some cases students will be required to identify material from current media to watch and respond to. The texts below are recommended for those who want to improve the following skills by themselves.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
The final grade for this class is cumulative. It is going to be based on the following for areas;
Attendance and participation 20%
Class Work 30%
Quizzes 20%
Final Essay 30%
The main goal of the class is to develop critical thinking skills and clarity in communication. Students' work will be graded based on these.
