Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course will explore the history and politics of Russia. The first part of the course will be structured in a chronological order. The discussion topics will include causes and consequences of the Russian Revolution, characteristics of Soviet rule, collapse of the Soviet Union, regime change (including transition to market economy), and recent development of authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin. No prior knowledge of Russian history and politics is required.

【Learning Objectives】
By the end of this course, students will be able to 1) explain Russian history and politics, and 2) apply various theories of political science to analyze the Russian case.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Read through the reference materials before class. After the class, review the lecture contents again for a better understanding.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be based on the following:
Term-end examination: 70%, Reflection papers: 30%.
