Outline (in English)

This class is for students who have JLPT N2 or equivalent proficiency in the Japanese language (a 2-credit course). The course seeks to teach students how to conduct fieldwork by covering basic fieldwork techniques such as interviews and observations. It aims to help students enhance their language and communication skills, as well as their socio-cultural analytical skills.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to conduct fieldwork on sociocultural topics and deepen their understanding of contemporary sociocultural issues and phenomena. Students will enhance their Japanese language skills by collecting relevant articles, conducting interviews, creating interview transcripts, analyzing data, making presentations, and writing a research proposal, fieldwork observations, and a final mini ethnography. Students will also be able to enhance their qualitative research skills, critical analytic skills on social issues, and reflective writing skills. Students can utilize these skills for their future studies and research at universities and graduate schools.
【Learning Activities outside of Classroom】
Students will be given weekly assignments that they will be expected to complete by the due dates set by the instructor. Your study time will be about four hours for each class meeting.
