Outline (in English)

This class aims to improve the academic Japanese skills needed to write dissertations (master's theses and doctoral dissertations) at graduate school.
This class is oriented for students who already have the basics of academic writing and have already written reports and essays in the past experience. In principle, participants must have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1.
In the each lesson, students learn the expressions for writing a dissertation and carry out activities.
The first half of the semester focuses on "speaking activities" (presentation of research thesis of your dissertation), while "summary writing activities (about 4,000 characters)" will be conducted during the second half of the semester.
* Level check and interview will be conducted in the first class. The class starts from the second class. Therefore, it is mandatory for students to attend the first and second classes.

(Leaning activities outside of classroom)
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting, and to be prepared for the review quiz in the next class. Your study time is at least two hours for each class meeting.

(Grading Criteria/Policies)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Mid-term examination 25 %
Therm-end examination 25 %
Assignments 20 %
Quizzes 20 %
in class contribution 10 %

*Students who have missed more than 4 class meetings will not be allowed to take the term-end exam, nor acquire credit.
