Outline (in English)

Course Outline
How did the “Made in Japan” image change from shoddy goods in the immediate post-war period to its high quality image today? In answering this question, the focus in Operations Management is on the role of monozukuri: “making things.” In the first part, we begin with identifying in new product/service design. In the second part, we will merge these customer needs with a company's "intrinsic technology." In the third part, we will examine the information systems underlying a company’s supply chain.

Learning Objectives
・Understand the 3 broad areas of OM: strategic, tactical and operational
・Explain the OM concepts, principles and methods in each of these 3 areas
・Acquire critical thinking skills in analyzing the main issues in OM

Learning Activities Outside the Classroom
・For each assignment, students will conduct online research.
・Optional, conduct on-site investigations.

Grading Criteria/Policy
The achievement of these learning objectives will be evaluated through class discussion, group work, assignments and reports/presentations.
・Three (3) written brief reports (10, 35, 20%).
・Class discussion/groupwork and presentations (20%)
・Attendance (15%)
