Outline (in English)

Course outline: In this course, you will learn introductory contents of finance, which most of you are unfamiliar with. However, the knowledge of financial transactions and securities taught in this course is essential for those who will enter the workforce. For one thing, many graduates of the Department of Business Administration will work for financial institutions as well as finance departments of non-financial corporations, and finance theory is essential for those businesses. Also, for individuals, knowledge of finance is indispensable for investing in bonds, stocks, mutual funds, etc., as well as for pension management. In this lecture, you will learn the basics of financial transactions and securities markets. Furthermore, you will learn the concepts and calculation methods of future value and present value, and elementary methods for evaluating bonds and stocks. In addition, students will learn the rudiments of derivatives trading. The content of this course will be the basis for the finance courses you will take in the second year and beyond. So, students are expected to gain a solid understanding of the content of this course.

Objectives: Students will learn the following knowledge and skills.

(1) To be able to understand financial news properly based on essential knowledge of financial markets and securities.
(2) Concepts of interest rates, future value, and the basic calculations related to these concepts.
(3) Institutional knowledge of bonds, yields, and elementary analysis of bonds.
(4) Institutional knowledge of stocks and elementary analysis of stocks based on dividend discount model.

(5) The basic institutional knowledge of forwards/futures contracts and options

Learning activities outside of classroom: Students are expected to read the designated sections of the textbook before class and review the contents covered in class after class. The standard preparation and review time for each class is 2 hours.

Grading Criteria: If the final exam can be given face-to-face, the final exam will account for 70% of the grade, and quizzes and class participation will account for 30% of the grade. On the other hand, if the final exam cannot be given face-to-face, the alternative to the final exam will account for 50%, and the class quiz and class participation will account for 50%.
