Outline (in English)

This lecture discusses modern and contemporary local society and community focusing on the invention and (re)construction of traditional culture in Japan. It analyzes the impact of community development through traditional culture on the local residents, the bearers, and the culture itself.
The purpose of this lecture is to enable students to analyze and understand the following three points from a sociological perspective.
(1) What are the difficulties involved in passing on traditional culture in the face of declining populations and aging populations in regions and communities?
(2) Why do residents and bearers of traditional culture and performing arts feel that they are essential?
(3) What problems arise when traditional culture is used for tourism and community development, and what is the resilience of people who take advantage of such circumstances to pass on their culture?

The contents of each class are deeply interrelated, so please review the contents of the previous lecture before coming to class. Students will be expected to submit their short report via Hoppii after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following. Term-end examination: 72%、Short reports : 28%
