Outline (in English)

Social life never happens in a vacuum. What kind of changes are induced in communality by changes in the physical urban environment, and how does that in turn alter the urban environment? Those are basic questions this course addresses. To do this, we take a social and historical approach to understand contemporary environmental challenges. At the end of the course, students are expected to explain the essential concepts of environmental sociology, identify the policies and understand key challenges related to Japanese environmental policies. Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments before each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class. Final grade will be decided based on short reports (100%) when given online and the term-end examination (100%) when in-person.
