Outline (in English)

(Course Outline)
This course will be conducted in a participatory learning environment.
The goal of this course is to enhance students’ reading and listening skills and improve grammar skills. In class, students will not just memorize words, phrases, and sentence patterns. They will have lots of opportunities to read, listen, think, and talk. Also, depending on the nature of the text and the purpose of reading it, students will either read quickly or attentively. This will allow them to learn when to use a dictionary and when not to. Some students may think their textbooks are a little too challenging in the beginning, partly because all the writing is in English. To overcome this concern, they only have to come to class well prepared (self-study is vital!), and then they will get the most out of their textbook readings. Students who study a lot outside of class are likely to be actively engaged in their class activities.
(Learning Objectives)
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
(1) improve and expand their vocabulary through extensive reading.
(2) read quickly or attentively depending on the nature of the text and the purpose of the reading.
(3) identify essential and non-essential information in the text.
(4) learn when to look up words in the dictionary and when not to while reading the text.
(5) take notes on spoken material and summarize its content.
(6) give feedback on what they have read or listened to in simple written and spoken English.
(Learning activities outside of class)
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Needless to say, preparation for class activities differs for each student. However, one thing they should include in their pre-class activities is reading the text out loud. Even though silent reading enables students to read faster, reading aloud is a great means of actively engaging with the course material. This practice helps them understand what they are reading at a deeper level. It also boosts their listening and speaking skills. Their study time should be at least one hour for each class.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Students’ final course grades will be determined based on the following criteria:
End-of-term assignments (Reading I, Reading II, Listening, Writing): 40%
Out-of-class assignments (10 assignments required) : 40%
Participation
(how often students contribute positively to class activities will be evaluated, not just their presence in class): 20%

Students must earn at least 60% points to pass this course.
Assignments handed in after the due date will not be evaluated.
If students fail to submit four or more assignments, or if students miss four or more classes, they will be automatically graded with a 'fail' for the course.

The proposed schedule is subject to change.
