Outline (in English)
Students aim to develop skills necessary to express opinions and to discuss different views on selected court cases, legal matters and current issues in society.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
The object of this course is to introduce to students current legal matters and issues. Students read and examine truncated versions of real court cases in the U.S. and Japan. The course will help students to gain an understanding of legal issues stemming from differences in culture.
到達目標Goal
Students will continue to apply summarizing, paraphrasing, essay writing, and presentation skills acquired previously to this course. Students will be able to introduce a problematic issue of Law, summarize past related cases of law, comment and discuss the issue of law, and propose solutions. Lastly, students will learn how to write a research paper in the American Psychological Association (APA) style for a term paper.

授業の進め方と方法Method(s)(学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )
Vocabulary and reading preparation done before class. Explanation and commentary of the legal cases will be provided by the instructor. Comprehension check through reading exercise questions. Discussion in small groups. This class will meet Face to Face in class 対面授業. Whereas situation requires, online class formats オンライン授業 may include Zoom sessions - real time and or On Demand class materials and assignments. Homework assignments may be shared with the whole class for comprehension check and motivation. They should be considered good examples of student work and are used to further discussion. Results of quizzes and midterms will be reviewed in class. Each and every student's performance may not be addressed individually but selected and representative ones will be chosen in general. 授業で提出されたリアクションペーパーからいくつか取り上げ、全体に対してフィードバックを行う。リアクションペーパー等における良いコメントは授業内で紹介し、さらなる議論に活かします。授業内で行った試験や小レポート等、課題に対する講評や解説も行う。

テキストは、アメリカと日本で実際に起こった、法律や訴訟に関わる様々なエピソードを紹介します。故マイケル・ジャクソンの遺産問題から、終身刑になった犯罪者の更正していく様を描いたものまで、幅広いトピックの法律に関連する事例を英語で読みます。法律だけでなく、考え方や社会など、いろいろな角度からアメリカと日本との違いを認識し、理解を深めることができます。事例の裏に絡み合う人間模様が学習者の興味を引き、英語の勉強になるだけでなく、一般教養としての法律の知識も身につけます。

*Attendance will be taken. In case the situation requires classes to be held online, if you complete the assignment(s) for the week, you are counted as present. If no assignments are submitted, then you are counted as absent. For Face to Face classes, attendance will be taken and you will be counted present only if you attend class regardless if you have submitted the assignments or not. 出席は毎回確認します。オンライン授業に移行した際は課題を全部完成すればその授業を出席となります。未提出の場合は欠席となります。対面授業の場合は課題の提出にもかかわらず、出席した方しか出席となりません。
