Outline (in English)

The content of this class is the history of Western philosophy. Students will study the lives and ideas of major Western philosophers from antiquity to the modern era. The history of philosophy is a history of dialogues and debates among great philosophers and is a philosophical activity in itself. In the class, students will follow the thoughts of philosophers and learn specifically what they understood as philosophical problems and what answers they gave to those problems. By doing so, students will gain the ability to think for themselves and to think philosophically.

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
A. While acquiring knowledge about the history of philosophy, students will be able to give their explanations.
B. Students will be able to formulate, think about, and discuss philosophical issues regarding various everyday events.
C. Through discussion, students can learn about the existence of diverse opinions and deepen their thinking.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours understanding the course content.

Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following.
Term-end examination: 50%、Short reports : 30%、in class contribution: 20%.
