Outline (in English)

The History of Japanese Literature is a course the purpose of which is to study the historical development of Japanese literature. Every genre of literature has come into existence during its own specific period of the times. Students are expected to analyze and inquire into the process of it and the significance in it from a viewpoint of literature as human science, to consider what kind of roles genre of literature has played in history, how genre of literature has moved so far with history, when seen in the general history of expression. There are subjects for essays and examinations for credits in both general argument and each detailed argument.
It is important not to take the history of literature as a mere medley of literary works, but to look into it as a whole and understand what it is for one to write, what each work possibly meant to say through grammar of the times. Students will be required to search into the origins of words and consider what men of old pursued, with microscopic and macroscopic eyes.
