Outline (in English)

This course introduces students to the basic concepts of law of obligations in general, and law of debtor and creditor, the principles of which are provided in Chapter 3, Part 1 of the Japanese Civil Code. The course will address the claims arising out of performance and breach of contract, the issues in debt collection processes, joint and several debt, guaranty, and assignment of contractual rights and liabilities, among others.
Upon completion of this course, students should have a clearer sense of how the law operates and how lawyers (courts) help to shape it in civil law practice, enhance reasoning skills in complex legal problems and develop the ability to identify major issues concerning debtor-creditor relations.
