Outline (in English)

The goal of this subject is for students to obtain a basic knowledge on the Japanese history of science and have clues for thinking from the scientific viewpoint about current affairs and the future of Japan as one of the most advanced countries of scientific technology. The period of this subject is from the days of the first introduction of Christianity in the middle of the 16th century to the ones of the collapse of the Edo Bakufu in the late 19th century. During that period some of Japanese people studied Western science as Nanban Kagaku(Southern Barbarian Science), and after the seclusion policy by the Edo Bakufu, which began in the early 17th century, some of Japanese people studied the Western science as Rangaku(the Dutch Learning) through Netherlands, for instance astronomy, medicine and so on. Among Western countries Netherland is only one that had commercial relations with Japan. At the same time during that period some of Japanese people developed their original arithmetic as Wasan. Through this subject students are expected to actively study more for deeper or wider understanding on this field and take a step toward other fields of history.
