Outline and objectives

Good communication skills are necessary for anyone wanting to work in an international environment. This course is for students with a strong desire to improve their English language presentation skills. The course will focus on helping students talk about their current research theme in English and acquiring the language skills used in Oral Presentations given in English.

Goal

The goal of the course is to develop students’ communications skills and confidence as public speakers. Course content will include listening and vocabulary development, as well as extensive practice in using spoken English as a presentation tool. The main theme of students’ presentations will be based on their current research interests.

The instructor's roles will be that of a co-communicator, facilitator, guide and helper. Students will be expected to actively participate in classroom activities, prepare weekly homework assignments, and review and practice at home for in-class presentations. Students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
Students are expected to prepare weekly homework assignments at home, and review lessons at home to enhance their participation in classroom activities and discussions. Effective presentations depend on sufficient preparation and practice, so students will need to prepare and practice outside of class before giving their in-class presentations.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、各2時間を標準とします。

The instructor will provide some reading materials related to Oral Presentation Skills.

References

Students will be expected to bring in reading materials related to their current research interests.

Grading criteria

30% On-going Evaluation participation, discussions etc.
20% Homework
50% In-class Presentations
** Class attendance is a course requirement.
Students are allowed no more than three absences in the academic semester.

Previous students were happy with this course and currently no data is available to support changing it. However, the instructor always welcomes comments and encourages students to make suggestions to improve the course at anytime.

Equipment student needs to prepare

We will use some OHC (Over Head Camera) and/or PC (Personal Computer) equipment to Present Visual Aids.
