All four skills in English will be covered in this course. Students will learn to say what they want to say in English about the topics listed in the syllabus. Homework will be reviewed and students will work in pairs or groups to practice dialogs, interview each other and discuss topics suggested in the textbook. Students can expect homework every week, in order to keep in touch with English outside of class. The instructor will also provide some cultural background about English-speaking countries and help students explain some aspects of Japanese culture in English. The instructor will let the students know what their current grade is for the course at the same time as each of two quizzes are returned with corrections. Students may ask how they are doing at any time. The instructor will also help each student correct English errors he/she has made in class.

A good English-English electronic or paperback dictionary. There are many good ones available. Every student should bring such a dictionary to class every session.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
There will be two quizzes with a maximum score of 50 points (16.7% of the total) each and a final exam of 100 points (33.3% of the total). Students will receive grades and corrections the next week in class. In addition, classwork and homework will be evaluated each week. In total, this factor will count 100 points (33.3%) for the whole term. Maximum number of points that can be earned: Quizzes 100 pts, Final exam, 100 pts, Class participation/homework, 100 pts = 300 points total. Students receive a higher class participation score when they are prepared with the homework, volunteer to answer or ask questions, and participate effectively in pair/group work. Students who miss five or more class sessions without a valid excuse (like an extended illness) may be failed.
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
Students have been well satisfied, with most exceeding performance expectations in past years. The only difference is that the same amount of material has been covered in fewer, but longer sessions since 2018 and class was conducted vias Zoom online in 2020.
学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
Students need only their textbooks and dictionaries.Smartphone dictionaries are acceptable.
その他の重要事項Others
Students are expected to have the textbook by the second week of class and bring it to class every week. Students should consider the board as an extension of their textbook. As a result, they should take notes on everything the teacher writes on it, unless specifically directed not to. Students who accumulate five or more unexcused absences during a term may fail. Students who know they must be absent on a quiz/test day should tell the instructor ahead of time and present certification for the absence. The instructor will reschedule the quiz/test. Students who miss the final exam for good reason should immediately contact the office to explain the reason. If the reason is acceptable (illness, death or serious illness in the family, for example) the instructor and student will then come to an agreement on how to handle the situation. It is up to the student to attend and know when quizzes and tests are being given, as the dates will be announced multiple times in class.
