Outline (in English)
This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency and to increase general proficiency in understanding written and spoken English as well as to improve particular skills for presenting information in English.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業は、豊かな語彙力・正確な文法力の定着を図ると同時に、それに支えられた4技能（リーディング、ライティング、リスニング、スピーキング）の総合的な向上を目的とする。理工・生命系の分野では、英語が世界共通語になっていることを受け、将来の技術者・研究者には必要な専門知識を英語で受信・発信できる英語力に加え、社会の要求に応えられる高度な英語運用能力の習得が求められる。本授業では、そのための基礎力・総合力・応用力をつけるべく、学生の英語力を基にどのスキルに重点を置くか見極めた上で、効果的な教授方法を取り入れて実施する。

Practical problem solving in pairs for familiarization with the grammar and vocabulary of each unit text; blackboard presentations of cooperative results; individual assignments and recitations; in class personal consultations. 【本授業の準備・復習等の授業時間外学習は、1時間を標準とする】Tasks not completed in classroom time will be assigned as homework for presentation at the next class. Therefore, absence from any class will not excuse any student from completing all of such tasks for the next class.
