Outline (in English)

This course introduces the fundamental concepts, theories, and applications of the strength of materials required for the student to be able to design an actual machine. The student of this course is expected to:
(1) Obtain basic knowledge about the fundamental concepts of stress, strain, and deformation in solids.
(2) Understand induced deformation and the load transfer mechanism in beams.
(3) Understand the formulation and calculate torsional stresses and deformation in circular and hollow shafts.
(4) Understand the stresses and deformation induced by a dynamic load.
(5) Understand the theory of strain energy.
(6) Understand the theory of compression buckling of a long pillar.
(7) Analyze and solve a wide range of exercise and application problems, deepen understanding of the strength of materials, and improve the ability to cope with an actual engineering problem.
The student’s overall class grade will be based on the following criteria:
- Short reports: 15%
- Term-end examination: 85%
This course will be taught in Japanese.
