Outline and objectives

In this course, students will read American anthropologist Ruth Benedict's classic book, "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture," one of the most influential studies on Japanese culture. By examining its contents and criticisms toward it, students will learn the underpinning concepts of Japanese culture and the importance of a critical understanding of culture.

Goal

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- explain underpinning concepts of Japanese culture,
- critically assess various discourses on Japanese culture.

The course proceeds with summarizing and discussing the contents of the text or criticisms toward it. Students will have to take charge of summarizing one chapter or criticism in the course. Submitting a reaction paper is required. Feedback will be done in the class.
