Learning English for active communication and understanding in the international environment
到達目標Goal
This course aims to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) by placing special emphasis on reading abilities. You will practice and learn to understand written text, as well as to express effectively your ideas which will help you become more active and confident communicators in the global society.

This course will be conducted mainly in English. First of all, you will develop reading skills by dealing with texts written on a variety of topics. Furthermore, your speaking skills will be enhanced by participating in a variety of activities, such as pair & group work, delivering a presentation and practicing parroting. There will also be listening exercises, as well as short writing assignments based on the topics discussed in each unit. Through these exercises, you will become more familiar with the active use of language and gain higher word consciousness of vocabulary used in context.
Comments and explanation about assignments and answers to questions from students are given at the end of each class.

Week 1:Introduction
Explanation of course requirements, tasks and goals; Review of the main points studied in the spring semester
Week 2:Unit 6 The way I see it
Listening and speaking practice: talking about appearance and personality, pair work; Grammar: comparatives and superlatives
Week 3:Unit 6 The way I see it
Reading and speaking: multicultural London; Vocabulary: synonyms and antonyms; Writing assignment: The town where I was born
Week 4:Unit 7 Living history
Explaining requirements for presentation No. 1 (parroting);
Listening exercise: Frieda Hoffmann – archaeologist and writer; Grammar explanation and practice: present perfect
Week 5:Unit 7 Living history
Reading: Living history; Vocabulary review; Listening and speaking: a family history
Week 6:Unit 8 Girls and boys
Listening and speaking practice: talking about famous people; Grammar: have to, should, must
Week 7:Unit 8 Girls and boys
Reading and speaking: families with all boys or all girls; Group work: things to wear
Week 8:Presentation No. 1
Students’ presentations No. 1: parroting; Explaining requirements and introducing topics for presentation No. 2
Week 9:Unit 9 Time for a story
Reading and listening exercise: Aesop’s fable; Grammar practice: narrative tenses and conjunctions
Week 10:Unit 9 Time for a story
Reading and speaking: describing a story; Writing exercise: writing about a book or a film
Week 11:Unit 10 Our interactive world
Listening and speaking exercise: inventions; Grammar: passives

Reading with comprehension: Five Internet firsts; Speaking: talking on the phone, pair work

Class preparation, vocabulary review, homework, preparation for presentations.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Students are expected to actively participate in class, prepare two presentations, complete writing assignments and homework and pass the final test. In principle, no more than 3 absences will be permitted per semester for the student to receive academic credit in the course.
Your work will be evaluated as follows:
- Active participation in class: 20%
- Writing assignments, homework, tests: 40%
- Presentations: 40%
