Outline and objectives

This seminar is intended for graduate students interested in documentary film, its history and approach. This course will be online (mix of on-demand and zoom).

Goal

First we will cover the history of cinema; from the birth to the dawn of cinema. Secondly, we will consider how documentary films are situated in the history of cinema. Third, we will look at documentary films in terms of approach. We will use Bill Nichols' six modes of documentary. Fourth, we will introduce Japanese documentaries, covering the period from the 1930s to the World War II, the early postwar period, the social movement of the 1970s, and the transition to self-documentary. Finally, we will look at new trends.

Default language used in class

英語 / English

Method(s)(学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )

The seminar is structured around two introductory lectures and five thematic blocks, each consisting of a screening, and a presentation followed by discussions. Students will present on the assigned readings for each block. Students will work with films as primary texts as well as other primary and secondary sources. Basic film studies skills will be introduced, practiced, and consolidated by applying it to the various clips used in class and the screenings (most of Japanese and non-English films will be shown with English subtitles but occasionally there are some clips without subtitles and the instructor will sum it up in English). This course will be online (mix of on-demand and zoom).
