Outline (in English)

This Lecture is going to deal with many topics concerning "corporations and labor" such as wage systems, working hours, the labor market and so on. An example of the contents in this lecture is as follows.
Wage differentials in Japan have been argued in the context of the Japanese payment system, which is based on workers’ attributes such as seniority, age, and capability rather than their jobs. They have been also discussed in light of the peculiarities of the Japanese appraisal system, such as the practice of not announcing appraisal results to workers and the lack of labor union regulations and the option for workers to voice their discontent with appraisal results. Previous studies have suggested two primary approaches to correcting these wage differentials. First, wage differentials should be corrected by strengthening regulations against the appraisal system. Second, they should be improved by changing the Japanese payment system to one based on jobs. By focusing on the latter, this lecture attempts to clarify wage differentials under a payment system based on “roles,” which is regarded as a payment system closer to one based on jobs.
In summary, the results of this lecture show that switching to a payment system based on jobs cannot correct wage differentials instantly; however, other types of wage differentials can be possibly introduced by changing jobs, and request new regulations.
