Outline and objectives

In this course, students will read "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword," one of the most influential studies on Japanese culture. By examining its contents, students will learn the underpinning concepts of Japanese culture and the importance of a critical understanding of culture.

Goal

- To be able to explain underpinning concepts of Japanese culture.
- To be able to critically assess various discourses on Japanese culture.

The course proceeds with summarizing and discussing the contents of the textbook and criticisms toward it. Students will have to take charge of summarizing one chapter and giving a presentation. Submitting a reaction paper is required. Feedback will be done in the class.
