Outline (in English)

The Japanese Tea Ceremony or chanoyu is a very good perspective from which to examine Japanese culture in a comparative cultural context. Chanoyu is a performance art which is created through 1) the drinking of special tea by a host and guests following strict procedures, 2) the employing of special types of tea utensils, and 3) the use of a defined space, a tea room or tea hut including a tea garden. Through this course, you will learn about not only various arts and crafts but also patterns, and symbols of the seasons. You will be encouraged to think about the relationship between nature and Japanese culture. We will examine the history of tea in Japan in the second half of the course.
As I would like to illuminate the aesthetics of Japanese culture, I will speak about not only chanoyu itself but also the secondary aspects of chanoyu, including the history of tea, kaiseki meals (懐石), and some special Japanese cultural concepts such as utsushi (写し), hakogaki, and mei(銘)or poetic name. The particular relation between a tea master and followers, called the iemoto (家元) system, will also be discussed in the class.
Grading Policy
Final grade will be determined by the final exam.
