Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Our objective is to Learn and understand basic human resource management theories and practices. We focus on HRM practices in Japan from comparative perspectives. HRM practices can be understood as a system. We are to focus on each area of HRM system respectively. Wage system, appraisal, recruiting and selection, training and development, internal promotion and welfare are main areas of HRM. Both lecture and discussion is expected. Students are supposed to participate in the discussion actively. Making presentation is also required.
【Learning Objectives】
(1) To understand the breadth of the subject area and basic concepts of human resource management theory. (2) To understand the basic theories and discussions on individual areas of human resource management. (2) To understand the basic theories and debates on individual areas of human resource management (3) To learn how to consider familiar cases based on the above (3) To understand the basic theories and discussions on individual fields of human resource management (4) To learn how to critically review articles related to human resource management (5) To obtain hints for the theme of research for the master's thesis, etc.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
A paper on an issue related to the theme of each session will be presented in class. Students are expected to read the papers in advance, understand the issues, and come to class with questions and comments. These will be discussed in class to deepen understanding of the topic. For each session, one or two representatives will be asked to prepare resumes for the assigned papers. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria/Policy】
Participation in class (20 points), reports on literature and case studies (30 points), contribution to discussions (30 points), final report (20 points)
Students will be assessed on their participation in the class, the quality of their reports in the sessions for which they are responsible, and their contribution to the discussions in the class. At the end of the course, students will be asked to submit a report on human resource management that is in line with their own problematic interests. The final evaluation will be based on the above factors.
