Outline (in English)
We learn sociology in English with the text "The Global Beauty Industry" (Meeta Rani Jha, Routledge 2016). With this text we learn the topics of gender, race, class, colorism, nation, bodies, multiculturalism, transnationalism, and intersectionality from the veiwpoints of sociology, as well as cultural, gender, media, and globalization studies.
Theo goals of this class are 1)progress in English reading on sociology, 2)understanding of relevant topics sociologically, and 3)advance in critical thinking on relevant topics.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend at least four hours to read and understand the text.
Grading will be decided based on report and presentation of assigned parts of the text (70%) and contribution to the discussion in the class (30%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
Meeta Rani Jha, The Golbal Beauty Industry (Routledge 2016)をテキストに、英語で社会学を学ぶ。このグローバルな美容産業についてのテキストの講読をとおして、ジェンダー、人種、階級、肌の色による差別、ネーション、身体、多文化主義、トランスナショナリズム、インターセクシュアリティといったトピックを、社会学、文化研究、ジェンダー研究、メディア研究、グローバリゼーション研究といった観点から理解する。
到達目標Goal
英語で書かれた専門文献の読解能力を向上させる。文献の内容を理解することによって、ジェンダー、人種、階級、肌の色による差別、ネーション、身体、多文化主義、トランスナショナリズム、インターセクシュアリティといったトピックについての知見と理解を深める。また、文献で扱われているトピックについて、批判的思考（クリティカル・シンキング）の力を向上させる。

この授業は対面形式で行う。受講者が、原典テキストの各章を担当してレジュメを作成し、内容を報告する（進度は各回8〜10ページ程度）。報告にもとづいて、受講者全員で質疑応答や討議を行う。また必要に応じて、派生的なテーマについても、受講者が学習と報告を行い、全体の討議に資するようにする。

原典テキストの講読部分を事前に熟読し、理解を深めるとともに、不明点や派生的な関心点を明確にして授業に臨むこと。また授業後は、復習的にテキストを再読し、十分な理解が得られるようにすること。さらに派生的なテーマについても積極的に学習すること。
英語で社会学のテキストを読むので、英和辞典は当然のこと、社会学辞典もあわせて用意するのが望ましい。
