This higher-level graduate course will guide students from the fundamentals of the writing process; pre-writing including brainstorming and note-making, paragraph structure, and concepts of unity and coherence to more complex written structures; paraphrasing and summarizing and argumentation.

The goal of this course is to help students expand and formalize the skills needed to write an academic thesis in English.

During the course, students will be expected to develop their writing skills by submitting regular summaries and discussion documents on topical global political issues. Grammatical mini-clinics will attempt to minimize common stylistic, grammatical and organizational errors. Much of the actual writing will be done outside of the classroom, with time set aside during the lessons for discussion, self and peer group evaluation and a variety of other activities.

Relevant materials will be provided by the instructor in the early stages of the course. Students will be responsible for gathering and organizing their own research materials as the course proceeds.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Grades will be based on a combination of attendance, in-class participation, and the quality of in-class and submitted written work. Further details relating to the grading criteria will be announced during the first class.
The final Thesis product will comprised 50% of the final grade

This course will focus on cooperative learning. Students will research and prepare debates and presentations on various topics and learn from each other.
The syllabus is flexible and subject to change. The choice of topics to be studied may change in line with the particular interests of the students. Please be aware of such changes along with date for homework assignments and in-class activities and quizzes.
