Outline (in English)
The length and level of difficulty of the selected reading materials will increase as the course proceeds. Students will be expected to have thoroughly read specific reading materials before each lesson, and will be encouraged to engage in an active analysis and evaluation of those materials during class time.
Grades will be based on a combination of attendance, attitude, in-class quizzes and the quality of the submitted work, both oral and written. Further details relating to the grading criteria will be provided during the first lesson.
Students are expected to play an active role in all aspects of this class in order to foster and maintain an academically challenging environment throughout the course.

This lower-level graduate course aims to help students acquire the skills needed to be able to read texts related to Global Politics in English with increasing levels of efficiency, comprehension and critical judgement.
到達目標Goal
Although the main focus will be on reading, the course will enable students to develop all four language skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading.

The course is thematically organised, thereby enabling concepts, topics and vocabulary to be recycled and reinforced. A wide variety of sources, including magazine and newspaper articles, essays and papers published in academic journals will be studied. The aim throughout will be to boost academic reading and critical thinking skills, together with the acquisition, and active use of, the academic vocabulary necessary to function at this level of study. Interaction with classmates in pair, small group and whole class activities will offer ample opportunity to exchange information and opinions. Students will also undertake reading exercises leading to a variety of oral and written assignments to be submitted throughout the course.
* Important: Depending upon the COVID-19 situation, part or all of this course may be conducted online. As such, this syllabus is flexible and changes may occur. It is your responsibility to check for updates and announcements both (i) on the course page within Hoppii, and (ii) in emails sent to your registered email address.
If classes are conducted online, Zoom will be the main platform used. Students will need a device that is connected to the internet and familiarity with Zoom protocol.
Feedback for homework and other assignments will be provided via Zoom and email, as well as during class (if the lessons are face-to-face)
