Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
This course is for learning the Japanese Modern Legal History, especially about the process of establishing major codes such as the Constitution, Civil Code, Commercial Code, Penal Code etc. The core part of the course is the history of Japanese legislation from the end of the Tokugawa period and the Meiji Restoration to the modern era, But the distinctive aspects of the laws and the legal systems in ancient times, medieval times and early-modern times are also discussed for the comparison with the modern and present times. In addition, we also learn about the history of the "Judicial system reform" and the "Discrimination and law" in Japan.

[Learning Objectives]
The goals of this course are to
[1] understand the outline of the process of establishment of
the major codes
[2] understand the difference between pre-modern and modern trials,
and
[3] understand present legal issues from those historical backgrounds.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.

[Grading Criteria /Policy]
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
[1] Term-end Paper: 50%,
[2] Short Reports: 30%, and
[3] Short Presentation: 20%
